Still enjoying our new bikes
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of new bikes, and for Team MAD, the new bike sheen hasn’t faded as yet! This July, we set our sights on cycling round the Isle of Arran (56 miles), a place often called “Scotland in miniature”, for a ride that left us recharged and inspired for bigger challenges ahead.
Catching the Ardrossan Ferry
Luck was on our side: we managed to get a slot on the 6 week Ardrossan to Brodick ferry meant our Arran adventure started sooner and with less faff than the wait from Troon. Rolling off at Brodick in the sunshine, it felt like the weather gods were firmly in our corner.
Riding the Island…Anticlockwise, of Course
For us, a trip around Arran is only ever done anticlockwise—it just feels right! The scenic route took us over undulating roads and quiet coastline, all beneath that rare phenomenon known as the Scottish sun.
Seals, Sweet Stops and Community Spirit
Arran’s wildlife didn’t disappoint—a few friendly seals made an appearance as we pedalled by. We stopped in Blackwaterfoot for water (and chocolate, obviously) and couldn’t help but admire the sturdy bike pumps dotted at key points round the island. It’s those little touches, plus the genuinely friendly “buzz” on the local bus, that underline the strong community spirit on Arran.

Having completed 56 miles in just over 4 hours we were enjoying a well-deserved coffee at Copperwheats Coffee Shop before getting the ferry back to Ardrossan when we spotted the Arran Graphics map. This highlights the island’s gems and whisky distilleries from Lochranza to Lagg—plus a few tongue-in-cheek additions like “Nothing Here” and “Bit Boring” as well as the dreaded “Midge City”!
We are looking forward to more cycling on the bikes which are fantastic!
